How People Learn

National Research Council (2000). How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School. Washington, D.C., NATIONAL ACADEMY PRESS.

This volume is an update to a two-year long study published in 1999 reviewing our best understanding of how cognitive science (cognitive psychology, neuroscience, computer science, etc) informs teaching and learning. The goal of the work is to build bridges between research areas, learning theory, and practice both in research and in the classroom. Topics include expert/novice differences, children's learning, teacher learning, design of learning environments, and directions in the development of a science of learning. This book is heavily referenced by funded grants (both NSF and NEH) and in education research, broadly.
