Karnes and Stephens wrote this book to cater mostly to primary and secondary teachers. However, the book provides a wealth of information about creative projects. Just as important, they discuss effective ways of grading these creative projects, offering a project criteria grid after each assignment. An entire chapter is devoted to creating rubrics to evaluate projects. Starting in chapter 4, Karnes and Stephens divide create projects up into different categories:

 

* Chapter 4: Visual Products

          * Includes cartoons, maps, mobiles, photographs, collages, etc.

* Chapter 5: Oral Products

          * Includes debates, discussions, speeches, storytelling, interviews, etc.

* Chapter 6: Performance Products

          * Includes experiments, dance, plays, musical performances

* Chapter 7: Written Products

          * Includes biographies, books, magazines, newspapers, scientific reports, scripts, short stories, etc.

* Chapter 8: Multi-Category Products

          * Includes exhibits, games, oral histories, web sites, multimedia slide shows, etc.

 

After each section, Karnes and Stephens also include bibliographies of other helpful sources related to these assignment types. While many of these assingments will be elementary for the college level, I think that this book is a valuable tool for thinking about incorporating creative projects into classes. Additionally, I think that the discussion of assessment techniques is particularly helpful.
